It's the most-watched animated film of all time on Netflix. Produced by American studio Sony Pictures Animation, KPop Demon Hunters has been breaking records since its release on June 20. Its action setting? Seoul, the capital of South Korea. Its soundtrack? K-pop. The plot follows a fictional girl band, the Huntr/x (pronounced "Huntrix" ), of three superheroines who lead double lives as demon hunters. The rival gang, the Saja Boys, are demons disguised as K-pop stars in the pay of the evil Gwi-ma, who threatens to steal fans' souls.

While kids may be watching it on repeat, it's the soundtrack that's captivating all generations. A true summer musical phenomenon, it has racked up over 3 billion streams worldwide. Its title track, "Golden ," topped the US and UK charts , even surpassing hits by BTS and Gangnam Style.

“The film resonated with K-pop fans, but also touched "The uninitiated," comments cultural critic Ha Jae-keun. Thanks to an intergenerational bridge, many parents have become passionate about K-pop, reinforcing interest in Korean pop culture and renewing a fanbase that until now had been mainly composed of teenage boys and young women.
